Official 2018 FBI Uniform Crime Report data is released today. Five times as many people were murdered with knives as they were with rifles of all kinds (including AR type rifles). “Assault weapons” as they are talked about in the media and on the campaign trail accounted for 2.1% of murder weapons in 2018, a rate that fell from 2.5% in 2017.
Going after “assault weapons” is politically expedient, but not addressing a significant problem.
