Border Patrol Agents Trade Fire Across Rio Grande

Authorities on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border are investigating after U.S. Border Patrol agents traded gunfire with an unidentified man who fired at them from across the Rio Grande.

Border Patrol spokeswoman Rosalinda Huey tells The Monitor of McAllen that U.S agents were near an RV park in the lower Rio Grande Valley city of Mission just before midnight Tuesday when they saw smugglers trying to bring marijuana across the river on rafts.

Huey says the agents tried to stop the smugglers, heard several shots, saw a man on the Mexican side of the river pointing a handgun at them and returned his fire. Huey says the agents aren’t sure if they wounded the gunman, but the gunfire stopped.

The smugglers abandoned their rafts and swam back to Mexico.
