Next in importance to the Constitution itself

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events occurrences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.

Bummer: I love this quote – but several on-line sources put it in the “falsely attributed…” category. Following are two; note that the second one brings up some notable problems with a longer version of the quote:

    Anyone have further info?

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks Phil. I’d love to definitively find out if it is a false or true statement. I really like the quote, but if it’s not by George Washington, I’d like to be corrected. If only we could find a transcript of the 1/7/1790 speech to congress to confirm….
